disabled hunting opportunities

Although mountain lion hunting in Arizona is legal in some areas, others oppose it. This issue is managed and controlled by the state. Each year, 320 mountainlions die. AZGFD has worked to minimize the conflicts between humans and mountain lions, including limiting hunting to adult females. This article also discusses how habitat management and non-lethal deterrents can be used to reduce conflicts between mountain lions, humans and them.

Each year, in Arizona, there are 320 mountainlions killed.

It is not known exactly how many mountain-lions are found in Arizona. According to the AZGFD an average of 320 mountain lions is killed each year. Most of them are young females that have just had kittens. One such kitten, Poppy, is a rare motherless kitten. Despite Arizona's low population of mountain lions hunting is still a significant source to wildlife deaths.

AZGFD manages mountain lion hunting

Arizona Game and Fish Department is responsible for mountain lion hunting. The guidelines are modestly better for the animals but do not provide fair hunting opportunities. The guidelines will be in effect from 2023. They also offer small improvements for black bears, and other ecologically significant carnivores. In addition, the guidelines require the state to take into account how hunting impacts the landscape.

Restricting hunting of females in their adult years

In an effort to understand the factors that affect the abundance of mountain lions in the state, the Arizona Department of Wildlife Conservation has proposed that mountain lion hunters limit the harvest of adult females in the state. The population estimates are calculated using statistical population reconstructions (SPR), that include survival data, age at harvest, hunter effort and hunter effort. These data can also be used to plan management actions.

Non-lethal deterrents reduce conflicts with humans

Arizona's state wildlife agencies regularly review their policies to implement non-lethal preventives in order to make sure that mountain lion hunters are safe. These policies are meant to reduce conflict between humans & predators, minimize the chance of lions being killed, and minimize adverse consequences for other wildlife populations. Arizona's policy about mountain lion hunting is only applicable to this particular species. However, similar principles apply to bear and coyote management.

Monitoring mountain lion abundance

Researchers collected scats from 117 animals in southern Arizona during the 2004-2005 hunt season. The data included the animal's survival and harvest chances, the prey items used, and the litter sizes. The prey species abundance was calculated by the total number of prey items that were harvested. In addition, they also calculated the frequency and percent of occurrence for each species. These cats had stable sex relationships over time.
